Campaigns of Month – Super Bowl Special

It’s that time again; the red-circled date on every big brand’s calendar as they pull out the stops and break the bank for a 30-second television spot costing 8 million dollars during Super Bowl 59. While it wasn’t really a contest on the pitch, there were plenty of talking points off it. Donald Trump was cheered, Taylor Swift was jeered, and Kendrick Lamar may have just put the final nail in the coffin on his public rap beef with Drake, singing his 5x Grammys award-winning dis track ‘Not Like Us’. But that’s not why you’re here, so let’s get into it.
As usual, the Superbowl brought out lots of weird and wonderful ads studded with A-list stars like David Beckham searching for his long-lost brother for Stella Artois, Harry reuniting with Sally throwing it back to their infamous diner scene for Hellmann’s and Seal becoming an actual seal for Mountain Dew. None of them actually make our list, but we’ll link them all at the end for you.
Uber Eats – A Century of Cravings
Arguably the best ad of this year’s Superbowl spots, Uber Eats spares no expense with the help of Matthew McConaughey as he pitches a film idea to Greta Gerwig about the birth of football being a conspiracy theory. Kevin Bacon, Charlie XCX and Martha Steward also cameo.
Booking.com - Get your stay ridiculously right
Whether you’re a bougie diva looking for a swanky hotel, a family searching for some PG fun, or a bachelorette party on the hunt for nightlife, Booking.com shows there truly is something for everyone, as the Muppets hilariously explain.
Pringles - The Call of The Mustaches
When a house party is in desperate need of a snack refill, moustaches around the world are called to arms to help. Nick Offerman and James Harden star with their iconic facial hair at the heart of this weird story.
Lilo & Stitch | Stitch Runs Loose At The Big Game
A contender for the most underrated ad of Super Bowl 59. Instead of simply dropping a trailer for the upcoming live-action Lilo and Stitch film, Disney opted to let Stitch loose during the big game in this funny spot. Taking inspiration from popular meme videos of animals running onto a sports field with security guards frantically trying to catch them, Stitch unleashes mayhem in the stadium, hijacking a cart and digging holes in the pitch with the commentators watching on in disbelief.
Google Pixel – Dream Job
Probably the most emotional and sensible ad of this year’s Superbowl, Google showcases its new AI assistant for all its Pixel phones. The ad depicts a father practising for a job interview while reminiscing about the wonderful times he’s spent with his daughter as she grows up.
A weird seal of approval
We think rather than trying to explain what’s happening in this one, we’ll just let you watch and find out…
A-list loaded
Stella Artois and David Beckham have had a long-standing partnership, with their latest ad campaign teasing that Beckham had a long-lost brother. Like the Waitrose Christmas ad, Stella released a two-part mystery campaign, with the second instalment revealing Beckham’s brother was Dave Beckham, played by Matt Damon.
Past meets present
We feel this ad will likely be lost on Gen Z but anyone born pre-1995 will appreciate. Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal team up once again to recreate THAT scene from when Harry met Sally with the help of Hellman’s Mayonaise. The world’s new poster girl, Sydney Sweeney also makes a cameo appearance.
So there you have it, folks. Another month checked off the list. We can’t promise March will deliver like this one, but hey, who knows? Remember, if you’re looking for an agency to partner with to create award-winning campaigns, get in touch.
